Politicians in Wales take significant steps in the “should I smack my child” argument
On 26 March 2019, the Welsh Government introduced the Children (Abolition of Defence of Reasonable Punishment) (Wales) Bill to the National Assembly.
If the bill is passed, adults acting in their parental capacity will no longer be able to physically punish children.
The potential Act will technically abolish the common law defence of reasonable punishment.
Deputy Minister for Health and Social Services Julie Morgan said:
We are sending a clear message that the physical punishment of children is not acceptable in Wales. I think it’s clear that this is the 21st century and we here in Wales have led the way on children’s rights and this is the next step to fulfil those rights for children so they’re safe from physical punishment.
Some have commented that this marked stance of Welsh politicians demonstrates that what was acceptable in the past is no longer acceptable, and as such Wales are taking a big step forward in protecting children’s rights.
The Bill is expected to get Royal Assent in March 2020. Watch this space to find out whether the bill is passed and the impact this will have across Wales.
