The Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration publishes its annual report

The Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration (ICIBI) has recently published its annual report, concluding that the UK immigration system does not have the capacity, and often the capabilities, to perform its functions well at all times. It also found that the Home Office struggled with poor record keeping, quality management, and internal and external communications. On the plus side, the ICIBI found that the EU Settlement Scheme was well resourced, supported at the most senior levels, automated to a significant degree and compared with many other elements of the UK immigration system, was relatively well-run.

Looking ahead to 2019-20, the ICIBI and the Home Office have some work to do in order to get the best value from inspections and recommendations to improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the UK immigration system. The Government intends to overhaul the immigration system in 2021 after the UK leaves the EU but limited information has been provided on how that will work.
